JEmuJEmu is now replaced by JEmu2! Click here to check out JEmu2 and my other projectsOkay, now that you know this, let me give you some background about JEmu: JEmu2 is an arcade emulator applet capable of playing many 70's and 80's games like Pacman, Space Invaders, Frogger and many more. It was inspired by both JAE (Java Arcade Emulator) and MAME, and combined the generic approach of MAME with the use friendlyness of an applet like JAE. Later I worked on JEF and CottAGE, JEF being the 'Java Emulation Framework' and CottAGE being the emulator built on top of JEF. You could say that JEmu is the 'daddy' of JEF and CottAGE, since they recycled many of JEmu's 'meaty' components like the Z80, I8080 and MC6809 CPU cores and the AY-3-8910, SN76496 and Namco sound chip emulators as well as some of JEmu's design. JEmu started out as a Pacman emulator, which hw I completely figured out myself through reverse engineering (well, except graphics decoding and sound). Of course it had been done many times before, but I wanted to learn what emulator programming entails and it was just a fun puzzle to do. Later I created a 'driver' architecture around JEmu, similar to MAME but somewhat simpler. At some point there was even a ZX-Spectrum driver inside JEmu, although I never released that. Now, just for the sake of nostalgia, I kept one JEmu classic online: Space Invaders! Click here to play Space Invaders! The other games (and many more) are available in JEmu2. Have fun! |
